Improve your website speed

Published on September 26th, 2009 by in Design

The following is a list of things you can do to help improve your website loading speed.

  • Use GZip compression for CSS, Javascript etc. Check your site here.
  • Minimize your javascript. You can use JMin for this.
  • Remove ETags
  • Set Header Expires to future
  • Put scripts at the bottom of the page

GZip compression can be controlled in Apache servers using  .htaccess -

SetOutputFilter DEFLATE

php_flag zlib.output_compression On
php_value zlib.output_compression_level 5

You can also remove Etags and set Header Expires in. htaccess using the following -

ExpiresActive On
ExpiresDefault "access plus 12 hours"
ExpiresByType image/gif "access plus 2 month"
ExpiresByType image/png "access plus 2 month"
ExpiresByType image/jpeg "access plus 2 month"
ExpiresByType image/ico A2592000
ExpiresByType text/javascript "access plus 2 month"
ExpiresByType text/css "access plus 2 month"
FileETag none

How to enable GZip in Centos 5

1 . Login to SSH and create a file in the following location
/etc/httpd/conf.d/deflate.conf

2. Insert the following into the file you just created and save it
# Insert filter
SetOutputFilter DEFLATE

# Netscape 4.x has some problems...
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4 gzip-only-text/html

# Netscape 4.06-4.08 have some more problems
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4.0[678] no-gzip

# MSIE masquerades as Netscape, but it is fine
BrowserMatch bMSIE !no-gzip !gzip-only-text/html

# Don't compress images
SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI .(?:gif|jpe?g|png)$ no-gzip dont-vary

# Don't compress already compressed stuff !
SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI .(?:exe|t?gz|zip|bz2|sit|rar)$ no-gzip dont-vary
SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI .pdf$ no-gzip dont-vary

# Make sure proxies don't deliver the wrong content
Header append Vary User-Agent env=!dont-vary

# Log Stuff !
# DeflateFilterNote Input input_info
# DeflateFilterNote Output output_info
# DeflateFilterNote Ratio ratio_info
# LogFormat '"%r" %{output_info}n/%{input_info}n (%{ratio_info}n%%)' deflate
# CustomLog /var/log/httpd/deflate_log deflate

3. Restart Apache and you are finished
/etc/init.d/httpd restart
